The voices of The Island of Doctor Moreau

6 voices in The Island of Doctor Moreau by H. G. Wells. Every one is a separate voice, cast to the character as written.

  • Narrator (narrator) — Edward Prendick, a shipwrecked biologist narrating his horrifying experience on Doctor Moreau's island in retrospect. Educated, rational, yet increasingly unravelled by what he witnesses.
  • Doctor Moreau (antagonist) — A brilliant, remorseless vivisectionist who has spent years reshaping animals into humanoid Beast People on a remote Pacific island. Powerfully built, white-haired, utterly without empathy for pain.
  • Montgomery (supporting) — Moreau's assistant — a disgraced doctor who fled to the island after a scandal. Rough-edged, rum-soaked, secretly troubled by what he and Moreau do. Has a slight lisp. More human than Moreau but complicit in his crimes.
  • The Sayer of the Law (supporting) — A large, grey-furred Beast Person who leads the ritual recitation of Moreau's laws in the Beast People's village. Sits in the dark of a den and intones the Law with solemn authority. More intelligent than most Beast People.
  • The Ape-man (supporting) — A Beast Person who serves as Prendick's guide to the Beast People's village. Chatters and gabbles, repeating himself. Has been branded for breaking the Law. Pathetically eager and frightened.
  • Captain Davies (minor) — The drunken captain of the Ipecacuanha who refuses to carry Prendick and throws him off the ship. Brief, aggressive, contemptuous.
